Dominican Republic

Medical Tourism in Dominican RepublicThe Dominican Republic is a sovereign island nation in the Caribbean Sea, with a population of around 10.4 Million. As a developing nation sharing the Española Island with Haiti, it is primary dependent on agriculture, mining, trade and services. The service sector is the new leading employer in the destination, as tourism accounts for more than $1 Billion in annual earnings, with agriculture in a not so distant second. As a tourist destination, it is the most visited place in the Caribbean, specially the cities of the southern part of the nation, which have state of the art golf courses, all inclusive resorts and pristine beaches.

It has a three tier public healthcare system, which guarantees access to free, socialized care. The three tiers are the subsidized regime, the contribute regime and the subsidize-contribute regime, which speak for themselves in complexity. The private healthcare system perfectly co-exists with the public one, because in the past, the government only contributed around 1% of GDP to public healthcare, allowing for private hospitals and clinics to grow all over the destination. More than 5 million tourists already visit the island annually, allowing for huge opportunities on the medical tourism side.
